The Best and Worst Things About Digital Photography

water

It's nearly spring in Southern Oregon. Water rushes through Ashland Creek on Sunday.

Here's my short list of best and worst things about using a digital camera.

Best Things

Photography is easier than ever -- anyone with a digital camera is a "photographer" now.  Depending on your perspective, however, this could be a bad thing, because there is not enough work to go around.  In the long run photographic images have  improved as more people jump on the digital bandwagon. Digital photography, camera phones included, are empowering people to increasingly make and share their images.

Chimping -- this refers to the ability to review images immediately after capture. We live in an age of instant gratification with fast food and fast cars. Why not fast pictures?

Exposure control -- The ability to switch from 1600 to 100 iso during the same shoot is extremely satisfying.

The cost of taking images may continue to come down as more models flood the market. The quality of the cameras also continues to improve.

Worst Things

Seat time -- sitting in front of a computer screen editing images is terminal with digital technology. I once thought that digital photography might actually save time -- it can, but most the time it doesn't.

Too many pictures. The digital camera encourages to make more images than they previously made on film. A lot of the picture I see, are much of the same thing over and over again.
