Jason Fithian, far right, a San Jose State photojournalism student and volunteer with the Luci S. Houston Photography Project edit images with fifth graders at the KIPP: Heartwood Academy in San Jose on Saturday. The project provides children in underserved neighborhoods a chance to develop visual literacy and writing skills through photography.
Anne-Marie McReynolds a photojournalist at the San Jose Mercury News has been the driving force, founder and director of the project, which brings KIPP students together with area professionals. On Saturday, Liam and I visited the project for the first time. Anne-Marie is not only a very talented photographer but also a gifted teacher and it was fun to ease her so at ease with the students. Anne-Marie makes learning fun for everyone. In addition, several San Jose State University students have been participating in the workshop that helps students understand the power of photography in every day life. For me, it was a great joy to watch the KIPP students interact with the college students.
