Pictures provide perspectives that can support, and can even surpass, textual explanations.
Since September of last year the San Jose Mercury News has dedicated a page exclusively to images depicting the major headlines of the week.
The page is called "Six Days in Pictures" and, according to staff photojournalist and picture editor, Anne-Marie McReynolds, it is prioritized by news value and visual impact.
Anne-Marie notes:
"As the 1A (front page) Picture Editor (Friday and Saturday) for the Mercury News, I cull through over 15,000 images to translate international headlines into photographs. This display page [shown above] allows me to shape news content and inform readers about forgotten people and places that merit our attention and response."
