Ken Royce, Southern Oregon University photographer, took a picture of me making a final group shot of our Journalism Workshop for Ashland High School students on Thursday. I was amazed at how quickly the students picked up the skills needed to produce a newspaper. This is an exceptional group of young people and my faith in the future of journalism is in good hands. Ashland high is really lucky to have such a dedicated group of teachers and students as they revive their Rogue News again on campus.

Journalism Mini-Camp for High School Students

Ashland High School teacher Bill Gabriel works along side his students at the first annual journalism mini-camp at Southern Oregon University Monday. The high school is starting up its student newspaper this fall after a long absence.

The workshop is four-days long and covers some of the fundamentals of putting together a  student newspaper, including photojournalism and page design. At this point we have been concentrating on understanding the importance of a free press in society and the responsibilities many journalists feel entrusted with. In class today, for instance, we discussed the roles and relationships a campus newspaper should develop with the larger community.
