Despite everything said about the media in this country, it is important once in a while to think about how lucky we are to have constitutional rights protecting our ability to collect and report information.
This evening I was glancing over a roundup of alerts from the International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX), a global network of 72 organizations working to defend and promote the right to free expression.
In a typical week, IFEX along with other non-governmental groups working to secure press freedom around the world report on dozens of cases involving censorship, abuse, and violence against media workers.
For example, from June 5 - 9 the group reported on incidents against press freedoms in more than 30 countries. Everyday around the world newspapers are closed by repressive regimes, journalists beaten and threatened by police and military, websites pulled off-line, and photojournalists jailed.
